Traveling east on highway 14 from West Memphis through the Ozarks in Arkansas is a gorgeous drive. The grand finale of this scenic drive is pulling up near the Buffalo River for some scenic exploration and camping.
From the moment I researched our brief visit to Arkansas, my heart was set on seeing America’s first National River.
This waterway is free-flowing for 135 miles and is one of the last undammed rivers in the lower 48 states. It is known for its landscape and recreational opportunities…especially kayaking. You can find visitor information HERE.
We scored a campsite at Tyler Bend Campground (find my review on Campendium HERE). As we visited in April, there were plenty of sites to choose from on Easter weekend. We loved our site…and the great trail that led down to the river.
The overgrown trail leads you right to the river, and let me tell you…it is beautiful!
We all had a great evening exploring the river.
We had hoped to kayak downstream the next morning, but sadly there was a good rainstorm and we had to cancel that idea.
Arkansas is beautiful and the Ozark Range is simply amazing. This area left quite an impression on all of us. We will return to explore further…and hope to visit the areas further south in Arkansas as well. This is definitely worth adding to your bucket list!
